I have entitled this body of work, Somatic, meaning relating to the body (as well as a phonic nod to the artistic process, sew-ing). Each work in the series is a dimensional sewing machine “drawing” using black thread on starchy muslin fabric that depicts some aspect of human anatomy.
The drawings are designed to cause the viewer to consider themselves, the structures which keep them alive, and the inherent beauty of their form. The drawings intend to break the rigidity of portraying the body in a seemingly perfect light with the contours produced in the thread and folds created by the materiality of the medium. The drawings seek to define the intersection between medically accurate and socially acceptable human anatomy with the artist’s hand in thread and fabric and highlight the beautiful imperfections which engender beautiful forms.
